A deficiency in lactase (hypolactasia) results in the inability to fully digest lactose. Colonic microflora ferment undigested lactose in the intestinal lumen, which leads to production of short-chain fatty acids, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane.
These byproducts cause bloating, flatulence, and abdominal pain. Undigested lactose acidifies the colon and increases the osmotic load, resulting in loose stools and diarrhea.
Transient Lactase Deficiency has been shown to be associated with colic in infants. This situation might be naturally overcome with the development of the baby’s gut by the age of 4 - 5 months. If it doesn’t, the baby will most probably become a lactose intolerant adult.
Delictase® is a food supplement of lactase enzyme.
Delictase® Oral Drops is a 15 ml solution in bottle for infants, to be used with breast milk and infant formula.
Delictase® reduces the lactose content in the milk, breaking down lactose into two simple sugars (glucose and galactose), which can then be easily digested and absorbed by the intestine.
Delictase® is manufactured in the E.U. in a GMP certified manufacturer.
